Search this question and page 1 answers a different one. The ranking pages are written for homeowners wondering whether the company in their driveway is about to run up their utility bill. Useful for your customer, useless for you. Nobody ranking walks an operator through the decision: when the spigot is enough, when it is not, when hauling water is the job, and how to write the whole thing down so a water problem discovered at the curb costs the customer a trip fee instead of costing you the morning.
The default is the customer's spigot, and the quote should say so
Nearly every residential wash runs off the house spigot, because the alternative is trucking water, and water is punishingly heavy for what it costs. At 8.34 pounds per gallon,1 water outweighs almost everything else you could put on a trailer. Two hundred gallons is around 1,700 pounds. A full 275-gallon IBC tote runs about 2,300 pounds before you count the tote, and that load rides on your axles and your fuel bill on every leg of the route. A rig that hauls its wash water spends part of every day being a very slow, very expensive water utility. The customer already has a water utility. It reaches their spigot at municipal pressure and municipal prices, and using it is not a corner cut. It is how the residential side of this trade works.
The mistake is not the default. The mistake is leaving the default unstated. An operator who shows up assuming water and finds a dead spigot or a supply valve shut off for vacation has no move except a phone call and a reschedule, and no paper trail that says whose problem that was. The fix costs one line on the quote, covered below.
What the customer's water costs them
Customers sometimes flinch at the idea of a contractor running their water for two hours. The math is on your side, and it is worth knowing cold. The EPA's WaterSense calculator assumes a national average price of $6.06 per 1,000 gallons of water.2 A typical professional machine in the 4 to 8 gallons-per-minute class, drawing water only while the trigger is pulled, might move 300 to 500 gallons through a full house wash. Call it 500 gallons on the heavy end: about three dollars on the water bill. Sewer charges on the same bill can add a similar amount depending on the utility, and rates vary a lot by city, so treat the figure as a national-average illustration rather than a promise. Either way, the answer to "are you going to run up my water bill" is a number with a dollar sign and one digit to the left of it. Say it during the walkthrough and the objection usually dies on the spot.
The bucket test: know the spigot before you promise the machine
The spigot question that matters is not whether it works. It is whether it flows faster than your machine drinks. A pump rated at 5.5 gallons per minute fed by a spigot delivering 3 will cavitate, and cavitation eats pumps. This is the single most common way the customer's-water default goes wrong, and it is discoverable in under a minute during the walkthrough.
Run the bucket test. Open the spigot all the way into a 5-gallon bucket and time the fill. Thirty seconds to full is 10 gallons per minute, comfortable for any residential machine. Sixty seconds is 5, which feeds a 4-gallon machine and starves an 8. Anything slower than that and the spigot cannot carry the job on its own. Now you know before quote acceptance, which means the fix, whether that is a buffer tank on the rig or a hauled-water surcharge, goes on the quote instead of coming out of your margin. The numbers in this paragraph are round illustrations; your machine's spec sheet and your own stopwatch are the real inputs.
What a buffer tank fixes, and what it does not
The buffer tank is the standard answer to a slow spigot, and it is widely misunderstood by operators who are new to it. It is not for hauling water. It is a small reservoir, commonly sized in the tens of gallons, that sits between the spigot and the pump with a float valve keeping it topped off, the same mechanism as a toilet tank. The spigot fills the tank at its own slow rate the whole time you work. The pump draws from the tank at full rate whenever the trigger is down. Because trigger time is intermittent, the tank absorbs the difference, and the pump never starves.
What the buffer tank does not fix is a job with no water at all, or a supply so weak that the tank drains faster than the spigot refills it over the course of the day. The tank buys you minutes of reserve, not a shift's worth. If the walkthrough says the supply cannot carry the total gallons the job needs, you are no longer in buffer territory. You are in hauling territory, and that is a different line on the quote.
The jobs where you bring water
The property with no usable supply. Vacant listings and foreclosures with utilities shut off, new construction ahead of the meter set, rural sites with no exterior hose bib. Real estate agents and property managers hand this work out steadily, and the operator who can answer "the water is off" with "we bring our own, here is the line item" wins jobs the spigot-only rig has to walk away from.
The house on a well. Well systems are built for household demand, not for a machine pulling hundreds of gallons in an afternoon. Penn State Extension defines a low-yielding well as one that cannot meet the peak demand of the home, and notes that the pressure tank most well systems rely on holds only about 20 percent of its rated volume as usable water. A 42-gallon pressure tank discharges roughly 8 gallons before the pump kicks on, and after that you are pumping the well in real time.3 Outrun the well and the homeowner gets sediment in the lines and a dry-running well pump, on top of whatever happens to yours. Ask "municipal or well?" during booking. If the answer is a well and the owner cannot vouch for a strong one, quote the job with hauled water and say why. Homeowners on marginal wells know they are on marginal wells, and the operator who asks reads as the professional.
Commercial sites without practical access. Shopping centers with no exterior spigots the property manager can unlock, fleet washing in a yard with no plumbing, garages and lots where the nearest supply is a janitor's closet four doors in. Commercial work is bid, not priced at the door, and the water plan belongs in the bid the same way containment does. Pricing hauled water like the product it is
Hauled water is not a favor, it is a deliverable with a cost structure: the fill time before the job, the fuel and wear of towing an extra ton or more, the tank and the truck capacity it permanently occupies, and the mid-day refill run on bigger jobs. Operators who eat those costs to seem accommodating are pricing a product at zero because it is made of something cheap. The water is cheap. The logistics are not.
The clean structure is a flat hauled-water charge per load, sized to cover the fill time and the towing, with the load capacity stated so a job that needs two loads is visibly a two-charge job. Example, illustrative: a $75 per-load line for a 275-gallon tote, quoted twice for a large flatwork job the bucket test showed the site could not supply. Where the number lands for your operation depends on your fill source, your tow rig, and your route density. What matters is that it exists as a line the customer approved before the truck was loaded, not a cost you discover in your fuel receipts. The water-access line on the quote
Everything above collapses into a few sentences of quote language. The quote states which water plan the price assumes, and what happens when the assumption fails. For a standard residential job: price assumes a functioning exterior spigot with adequate flow, customer authorizes use of on-site water, and if no usable supply is available at arrival, a trip charge applies and the job is rescheduled or requoted with hauled water. For a hauled job: the per-load charge, the capacity per load, and the number of loads the price includes.
The point of the line is not to punish anyone. It is that a dead spigot discovered at 8 a.m. stops being an argument and becomes a clause both sides already agreed to. The customer who reads it calls ahead about the broken spigot instead of letting you find it. The one who does not read it pays the trip charge without a leg to stand on, because it is on the document they approved. This is the quiet work a written quote does in every trade: it moves the fight to before the truck rolls, when it is cheap.
One boundary note: this guide is about water going into the machine. What happens after it leaves the surface, the containment and where the wash water is allowed to go, is a compliance subject with its own rules, covered in pressure washing wastewater disposal. A worked example: one driveway, two water plans

Same 1,200-square-foot driveway, quoted at $260, twice. House A is occupied, on municipal water. The walkthrough bucket test fills the 5-gallon bucket in 40 seconds, about 7.5 gallons per minute, comfortably ahead of the 5.5-gallon machine. The quote carries the standard water-access clause, the job runs off the spigot, and the roughly 350 gallons used cost the homeowner near two dollars at the national-average rate.2 Clean job, no surprises, the clause never gets tested.
House B is a vacant listing, utilities off, quoted for the same $260 wash plus a $75 hauled-water line for one 275-gallon load. The agent approves it from her phone in four minutes, because a $335 total she can approve today beats coordinating a utility reconnection she would have to chase for a week. The tote goes on the trailer full, roughly 2,300 pounds of payload the truck was rated for and the price accounted for. If the job had been quoted spigot-style and the dead water discovered at arrival, the morning would have produced a wasted round trip and an awkward reschedule call.
