    Any time the work, price or schedule changes from what the customer agreed to. Get it signed before you do the extra work, so the new total isn't a surprise on the final invoice.

    What goes on a change order?

    The original job it changes, what's different and why, the added or removed cost, the new contract total, any schedule change, when it's paid, and both signatures with dates.

    Is a signature on a phone screen valid?

    In the US, the federal ESIGN Act (15 U.S.C. 7001) generally treats electronic signatures like ink for most business agreements. This isn't legal advice. Some states have their own rules for home improvement contracts, so check your state's contractor rules.
